Hi, I'm Wendy Horton, CEO of the Medical Center.
And today, I wanted to take a minute and really just speak from the heart. This past year and a half has been incredibly difficult. There’s been stress, fear, and anxiety. And now many of us are feeling incredibly tired. And let’s be honest, most of us also want to go on a real vacation. As I spend time with you, I’m so inspired by your compassion of taking care of patients and your perseverance.
I also know that you need more support, especially with our local and national staffing shortages that are impacting us here at UVA. And when I talk to you, I hear that retention and compensation are our primary concerns. I want to let you know that I hear you, and I totally agree.
And this is why the leadership team at the Medical Center is committing more than $30 million this fiscal year to improve our compensation. This includes both merit and market. This is significant progress, but please know, we're just getting started.
Our merit will be paid out in October, and then we'll work on market adjustments for our workforce starting in November. In January, we’ll complete another market review with refreshed data to see if there’s been any shifts that impact our planning. I'm also pleased to announce that the Medical Center is committed that compensation as our number-one priority, and we’ve built this into our long-range financial plan.
It’s going to take us a couple years to get where we need to be with compensation, but I do know this is a journey worth taking. And as I’ve said before, you have my word that we'll do as much as we can as soon as we can.
