Last week, I asked our team to share snapshots of the hobbies and adventures they’ve been enjoying this summer during their time off. Part of achieving our goal to be a best place to work includes recognizing that our team members have lives beyond the hospital. By getting to know one another better and highlighting our colleagues enjoying their well-deserved time off, we help build a supportive community where life outside of work is valued, respected, and encouraged.
Chris Moskaluk, Walter Reed Professor and Chair of Pathology and Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics | “I hiked up to Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park (Wyoming) and found that I had forgotten to remove my laptop from my backpack (wondered why it was so heavy). So, I got a picture of me “working” on vacation.”
Justlan Smith, Compliance & Privacy Analyst | Justlan shared a picture from Free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven with her son and a picture from her family summer vacation to Virginia Beach.
Min Lee, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of UVA Health University Medical Center | Min spent time this summer with her family in the great outdoors.
Mesha Jones, Ambulatory Clinic Nurse Manager | "Photos from a fireworks celebration held in Madison County at a local brewery. It was great because members of the community and outside the community came together to listen to a band, kids were running in the fields, and the sunset was great."
Aristea Vlavianos, 3 South Acute Oncology & Stem Cell/BMT Unit 8 West HUC | “Photos from Virginia Beach with my puppy Coco, a Siberian Husky mix! It was her first time, and she LOVED the water and the waves (as well as trying to catch the seagulls and sandpipers!)”
Theresa (Terri) Raju-Arroyo, Clinical Lab Scientist | Terri, who has been on our team since 1990, shared photos from her many summer activities including time with her grandson McKinley who spent 8 months in the UVA NICU and is now one year old!

Dorota Burna-Shelley, Dental Assistant | Another beautiful hiking trip!
Maureen Oswald, Volunteer Coordinator | “I suffered traumatic injuries in Oct 2023 with multiple surgeries this year (shout out to our Ortho teams)! Final surgery will be TKR in Oct. Family trip to Jersey Shore with rented mobility scooter (granny mobile) allowed me to tool around the boardwalk and zoo with my family for a very needed emotional uplift for all of us!”
