Vision and Voice

Cultivating Healthy Communities & Belonging for All | Mobile Care

As the world remembers the life and legacy of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, his words from one interview have resonated with me:

"I think there’s a human right to live a decent life, to have a home in which to sleep at night, to be free of preventable diseases, to have some hope that the future will be better than the past."

President Carter’s vision aligns closely with one of our key goals at UVA Health — Cultivating Healthy Communities & Belonging for All.

Last week marked a milestone in this journey with the grand opening of our Mobile Care Unit. Together with the Southwood community, we celebrated the launch of a program designed to bring routine healthcare directly to neighborhoods where access is often limited.

Healthcare doesn’t just happen in hospitals. It happens at home, in neighborhoods, and through the partnerships we build. The Mobile Care Program is one of many ways UVA Health is redesigning care delivery, using data-driven approaches led by our Population Health Department.

This program is powered by an exceptional team of School of Nursing providers, Population Health RNs and paramedics, patient access specialists, financial assistance team members, interpreter services, and more. With the support of our community partners, the Mobile Care Unit travels throughout Southwood and Fifeville neighborhoods each month — offering services from general health check-ups and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries to lab tests, pediatric care, and women’s health services.

The unit is about more than convenience; it is about providing foundational medical care, fostering trust, and listening to the voices of our neighbors in the places we know experience greater health disparities.

UVA Health also isn’t alone in this work. A strong community is built by many. Passionate individuals like UVA Health’s Dr. Max Luna's efforts with the UVA Latino Health Initiative have bridged gaps for over 20 years. It’s also strengthened by partnerships with groups like Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville which share a deep understanding that health and housing go hand in hand.

Through collaborations with our incredible neighbors of Southwood, Habitat for Humanity, the Boys and Girls Club, and many others, we’re redefining our region’s approach to health equity.

As proud as I am of what we’ve accomplished, there is more to do. But I’m optimistic because we’re in this together—with our neighbors, partners, and each of you.

Let’s keep working to create a future where health and hope are within reach for everyone. Your ideas and energy fuel this mission, so keep them coming through the Be Heard Suggestion Box.

Take care and be well,

Wendy
