Recently, I had the privilege of witnessing something truly special—an art exhibit that reminded me of why what we do goes beyond medicine.
UVA Health recently partnered with Albemarle County Public Schools to showcase student artwork in our hospital lobby. These rotating exhibits, running through November 2025, bring creativity and community into our spaces in a powerful way.

Art has a way of connecting us, of helping us see and feel beyond the everyday. At the exhibit, Anne Brown, UVA Health Arts Program Coordinator, and Rebecca Lewis, Chair of the Arts Committee, spoke about this wonderful community partnership and the importance of art in healthcare. Additionally, Evan Heald, Brodie Medical Education Committee Director and Associate Professor of Medicine; Rudy Beverly, Manager of Transportation and Distribution; and Kevin Fox, Director of Facilities Planning and Capital Development shared how their love for art shaped their lives before they entered healthcare. It was incredible to see students and parents inspired by our team’s stories—and just as powerful to see our team inspired by the young artists’ work!
One moment from the event really stood out. A mother, emotional and proud, shared that her daughter—one of the young artists featured— was once a patient in our PICU. Her daughter’s grandfather is currently a patient here. And now, her daughter’s art hangs in the very place that has cared for three generations of their family. It was a full-circle moment that touched everyone in the room.
It reminded me of a quote delivered by beloved actor Robin Williams:
"Medicine, law, business, engineering—these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, [art!]—these are what we stay alive for."

This is what healthcare is about. Yes, we treat illnesses and save lives, but we also create spaces for healing in every sense: physically, emotionally, and even artistically. Ultimately, we do this so that our patients can live full, meaningful lives.
To everyone who helped make this exhibit a reality, including our team members, community partners and the student artists: thank you. Your work matters. And to the entire team, thank you for all the work you do that goes beyond medicine. We are in the business of healing, in every possible way. And if you get the chance, swing by the medical center lobby hallway across from Volunteer Services to see the art exhibit in person!
Take care and be well,
Wendy
