As my final day as CEO of University Medical Center approaches, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting — on the journey we’ve shared, the challenges we’ve faced, and, most of all, the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.
Someone recently asked me a question that made me pause: “When have you felt scared as a leader?” At first, I couldn’t come up with an answer. But as we talked about the pandemic, financial headwinds, national unrest, and even MCIs — it hit me why fear hasn’t defined my time here.
It’s certainly not because the challenges weren’t real or the stakes weren’t high, it’s because, across every obstacle, I’ve never once felt alone at UVA Health.
At every turn, I’ve had an extraordinary team by my side — resilient, steady, and always grounded in purpose. What makes this place so special is the compassion, humanity, and genuine care you bring every single day. Beyond our team, there is a beautiful partnership from community members across Virginia and beyond who share in our mission. This organization and this community truly are unique in all the best ways.
Looking to the future, I want you to feel confident in the team leading this medical center forward. When I look at our End of Fiscal Year scorecard, I’m astounded by the sea of green — operational goals met or exceeded across the board. From patient progression, to workforce, to safety, these results show how far-reaching and impactful your work has been. When I first arrived in the midst of the pandemic, we were focused on response and resilience. To see where we are now, delivering such strong operational performance, speaks volumes about your dedication. These outcomes are the work of capable leaders and team members across our medical center and health system who remain here, ready for what’s next.
I am deeply proud of all we have accomplished together. If I leave you with one piece of advice, it’s this: trust in your shared mission. “Transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond” is such an easy mission to support, but it takes a courageous amount heart and hard work to make it a reality. This team shares that drive. I’ve seen it firsthand time and time again through my years here. Keep working together and UVA Health will continue to move in the right direction no matter what change may come.
It’s been an absolute honor and privilege to serve alongside you. I hold nothing but deep gratitude and fond memories from our time together. I have learned so much and have cherished every moment.
