Pegasus at 40: A Closer Look at the Legacy

One of the most important things we do at UVA Health is delivering expert care when and where it’s needed most. For 40 years, our Pegasus team has helped make that possible by delivering life-saving care through both air and ground programs across the state. On September 8, I joined the Pegasus team to celebrate their 40th anniversary and get you an inside look at this special program.

Beyond the awe of seeing Pegasus Air in action, there is a rich history to the Pegasus program. For instance, did you know the name "Pegasus" was chosen from a medical center contest and represents the bravery and life-saving spirit of the legendary winged horse? Perfect for this team! The Pegasus image is still seen on the side of our helicopter today.

What started in 1984 with a single helicopter has grown to include an advanced Airbus EC-145C2e helicopter and a ground ambulance for critical care transport. Pegasus Air has transported over 20,000 patients and flown countless miles across our state. The aircrew, which includes a pilot, flight RN, and paramedic, is ready to respond at a moment's notice, handling about one flight call every 24 hours — with tight response windows. The same dedicated paramedics and nurses serve on both the air and ground teams.

As we celebrate the first 40 years of this program, let’s also look forward to what comes next — all thanks to the amazing Pegasus crew who see no limits to how healthcare is delivered in our communities. If you have a special Pegasus story, please share with me in the Be Heard Suggestion Box.

Take care and be well,

Wendy
