On June 23, we celebrated team members who’ve dedicated 25, 30, 40, 50 — and even 60-plus — years to UVA Health. We recognized around 230 extraordinary individuals whose service adds up to more than 7,105 years. That’s more than time, it’s a legacy.
UVA Health has nearly 200 years of history, and these team members have helped write a significant chapter of that story.

Though I wasn’t able to attend the dinner in person, I didn’t want to miss the chance to say thank you. Your impact can be seen in the lives you’ve touched, the teams you’ve strengthened, and the care you’ve delivered day in and day out across decades.
I also want to give special recognition to our two 60-year-plus honorees: Betty Phillips and Bucky Thacker.

Bucky has been a true pioneer in medical imaging. As UVA Health’s first permanent OR radiologic technologist, he has been a key contributor in groundbreaking procedures. From designing procedural labs to inventing tools still in use today, his fingerprints can be found throughout our story of innovation.
Betty’s 65-year journey is rooted in heart and healing. From caring for tuberculosis patients in her early days to supporting patients and teammates in the Plastic Surgery Clinic today, she’s been a steady force of compassion and mentorship. Betty’s years of service to the field of nursing represent the backbone of this organization.

As we head into the Independence Day weekend, I’m especially reminded of how fortunate we are to have team members who’ve given so much to shaping our history and legacy. You are the reason UVA Health is what it is today. We are forever grateful for your contributions and hope we can honor them by continuing to advance UVA Health together.
Take care and be well,
Wendy
